Thinking about how to entertain the kids this autumn? See our full list of (mostly free!) family friendly activities to keep you entertained for the month.

Thames Festival 2013, 10-15 September

Cost: Varies (most events free)

This festival, celebrating London’s famous river, features art, music and educational events both on the water and along its banks and bridges. Top events to look forward to this year include ‘The Great River Race,’ featuring 340 boats participating in the river’s largest race, the Thames’ first floating art fair and the Blue Ribbon Village featuring a number of free activities designed for families focused on educating children about the ecology, history and industries of the Thames.

King’s Place Festival 2013, Fri-Sun, 13-15 September

Cost: £4.50 per person

Check out more than 100 music and arts events at this annual festival taking place at London’s modern King’s Place near King’s Cross station. From classical music to folk, contemporary, comedy shows and more, there’s bound to be plenty of entertainment opportunities for the whole family to enjoy. Featured family events this year include ‘The Wimpy Kid Show,’ based on the children’s book series-- which includes a quiz and drawing activities, a puppet version of ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ and a ‘Beast Quest’ tournament. The Guardian newspaper (whose office is located upstairs) will be letting children create their own front page, while boat trips will be offered on the Regent’s Canal via the Kings Place narrowboat ‘Tarporley.’

Cordwainers Garden Country Show, Sat., 14 September, 11am-3pm

Cost: Free

Learn all you need to know about gardening at this Hackney event showcasing the latest gardening tips and produce displays. Visitors may also enter the vegetable and produce competition, and be entered to win the Golden Turnip award. Craft workshops, raffles and teas and cakes will be available for all ages.

Bermondsey Street Festival 2013, Sat, 21 September, 11am-7pm

The annual volunteer-led street festival features music, dance, arts and more. Highlights for this year’s festival include a Street Fashion Show and dog show, a variety of stalls from local design makers in the area, and music ranging from America and ska-reggae to local singer-songwriters.

Apple Day at Stanmer Park, Brighton, Sun 22 September 11:00-5:00pm

Cost: Free

Come celebrate the autumn apple harvest at this annual apple-themed event in Stanmer Park. Tour the orchards and sample Sussex apple varieties, listen to live acoustic music, see cooking demonstrations and more at this apple-icious event.

Camden Arts Centre Family Fundraiser Day, Sun., 22 September, 2:00-4:30pm

Cost: Suggested donation

Head to Northwest London to visit the special day at the Camden Arts Centre featuring a number of art activities designed to raise money for the centre’s free education programme. This year’s activities include Paint & Paste, modelling small buildings, bookmaking, and an animation workshop. The centre will also be giving away special Camden Arts Centre bags to those who sign up to become a ‘friend.’

Autumn Craft Festival, Saddleworth, 28-29 September, All Day

For the third time this year, come enjoy a collection of local arts, crafts, food and creative stalls. Child friendly activities include face painting, free balloons, and Autumn activities. Additional fun options for parents include a ‘Wellness Room’ providing reflexology, massage, tarot and henna tattoos.
